Depending on your ceiling height, you may need a longer downrod to bring your ceiling fan closer to the floor for improved performance. Australian Safety Standards require the blades of your ceiling fan to be at least 2.1m (210 cm) from the floor. Connecting a longer downrod will typically result in better air flow.
For ceilings between 2.9m and 3.7m, a 90 cm downrod is recommended, and ceilings between 3.9m and higher should use a 180 cm downrod. Both of these may need to be cut to size; as a rule of thumb, aim for the fan blade to be between 240cm and 270cm from the floor.
